Join Us for the Narramissic*-Orland River Watershed Migratory Fish Celebration
Mark your calendar for Saturday, May 23, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at Fish Point Road/Castine Road in Orland Village. Hancock County Soil & Water Conservation District is proud to co-host this celebration alongside the Town of Orland and Great Pond Mountain Conservation Trust.
The event coincides with World Fish Migration Day, an international observance recognizing the importance of free-flowing rivers and migratory fish. Visitors can cheer herring as they make their way up the fish ladder at the Orland dam, watch water birds hunt herring through binoculars, and learn about the vital role Alewife and Blueback Herring play in the watershed ecosystem.
The day also honors watershed stewardship past, present, and future; a chance to recognize the people and partnerships keeping the Narramissic-Orland River healthy for generations to come.
Bring binoculars, bring the family, and join us at the river.
*In the language of the Penobscot Nation, Narramissic (nαlαmә́ssihtәk) means "hard to find." This celebration makes the watershed and its remarkable migratory fish a little easier to discover.
