Technical Services

Hancock County Soil and Water Conservation District offers a variety of technical services aimed at helping landowners and community members better understand and manage their natural resources.

  • Free Services:

    • Free Consults: As a service to the community, we offer general technical advice and information online and over the phone at no cost.

    • General Inquiries: Feel free to reach out to us with any general questions related to soil health, water quality, fish habitat, or native plants.

      • We understand that doing environmentally conscious work is not always easy or straightforward. If you aren't sure where to find the answer to your question or if you want to double check that you're on the right path, we can always help. If your question does not require a site visit or if you're just seeking general information, we will be happy to help you free of charge.

      • If we do not have the resources to assist you we can always point you in the direction of an organization that can!

    • Soil Testing: The District provides free, 24-hour pH soil testing through it’s drop box located at our office on 474 Bucksport Road in Ellsworth.

    • Equipment Loaning: The District lends out Oxygen testers, a lopper saw for brown tail moth removal or orchard pruning, and soil augurs for testing and soil profiles. Click here to request equipment.

  • $25 Site Visits: Beyond free phone and online consultations, we offer a 1 hour on-site visit anywhere in Hancock County for $25.

  • Backyard Rewilding Services:

    • Free initial site visit & assessment: Our team provides a free, comprehensive assessment for Backyard Rewilding through a Conservation Landscape Certification lens.

    • Native landscape design and species recommendations: For assistance through our Backyard Rewilding Program (such as native garden design services), the rate is $60/hour for services beyond the initial site visit.

    • Find detailed information on our Backyard Rewilding page.

  • $80/hour Technical Assistance: As described in the section below, our technical services range from watershed surveys and camp road erosion control, to native landscape design.
